Virgin Atlantic Missed Connection Compensation

Virgin Atlantic missed connection compensation.

How much will Virgin Atlantic compensate? What if you miss your flight?

Should you happen to miss a connection on a Virgin Atlantic flight, you might qualify for compensation. The compensatory sum varies based on the specifics of your instance. Factors such as nationality, ticket price, and insurance coverage do not affect your right to receive compensation. As a UK airline, Virgin Atlantic operates under UK and EU regulations.

Claims can be filed independently or with professional assistance.

1. UK/EU Missed Flight Connection Compensation

Missing your connecting flight on Virgin Atlantic could make you eligible for compensation. The rules in such situations are straightforward.

1.1 Missed Connecting Flight Due to Delay: Compensation

If you happen to miss a connection due to your initial Virgin Atlantic flight being delayed, you may be entitled to compensation under EU regulations.

If the delay can be traced back to the airline, you can claim up to €600, if your flight was heading to or from Europe. As Virgin Atlantic is a European airline, this rule is applicable to all Virgin Atlantic flights within, to, and from Europe. Technically, there is no term as “Virgin Atlantic missed connection compensation” because it falls under the broader term of Virgin Atlantic flight delay compensation.

For you to be eligible for Virgin Atlantic flight compensation, you must reach your ultimate destination at least 3+ hours later than originally scheduled. In summary, you can be compensated if:

  • It’s a 3+ hour delay;
  • It’s the fault of Virgin Atlantic;
  • Flight is to/from Europe.

These same conditions apply to Virgin Atlantic connecting flights. Remember, your final destination is the last airport (not any of the layover airports).

Here’s a simple example. Suppose you have a Virgin Atlantic flight from Manchester to New York via London. Your ultimate destination is New York, with London serving only as a transit airport. If you arrive in New York 3 or more hours late due to Virgin Atlantic’s fault, you will be eligible for compensation for the missed connection flight for the entire “Manchester – New York” journey.

1.2 Missing a Connecting Flight Due to Cancellation

If your flight is cancelled which results in a missed connection and causes a delay of 3 or more hours at your final destination, you may be eligible for compensation from Virgin Atlantic. The rules are very similar to flight delays.

This applies if the cancellation is due to the airline’s fault and you’re traveling to or from Europe. The compensation can be up to €600, determined by the distance of your flight.

In summary, you can receive compensation for a missed connection flight if:

  • Your previous flight is cancelled (or delayed) due to the fault of Virgin Atlantic;
  • You reach your destination 3+ hours late;
  • The flight is to/from Europe.

1.3 What About Self-Transfer Flights With Virgin Atlantic?

If you’ve booked separate flights for your journey (i.e., self-transfer), the regulations stated above do not apply. In such cases, if one of your flights is delayed or cancelled, you will not be eligible for compensation for the other flight.

For instance, if you have booked one flight with Virgin Atlantic and another with Ryanair, and Virgin Atlantic cancels their flight, you may be entitled to compensation for the cancelled Virgin Atlantic flight. However, Virgin Atlantic is not liable for your Ryanair flight, and they will not provide any assistance if you miss it.

This is something to keep in mind when making separate flight bookings.

Self transfers are less safe than connecting flights.

By Europe and EU here on this page (and on this website in general) we mean all EU Member States, the United Kingdom (UK), Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Reunion, Mayotte, Saint Martin (French Antilles), the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland.

2. Extraordinary Circumstances

These are situations that fall outside of Virgin Atlantic’s control.

During such conditions, compensation is not granted. Extraordinary circumstances, including extreme weather conditions or a global health crisis, are examples of such circumstances. If you’re unsure about any specific information provided by the airline, it’s advisable to double-check this information. Especially if it’s anything related to compensations and refunds.

You could also turn to a flight compensation firm for reviewing your claim and making sure you’re not being lied to by the airline. For instance, despite some airlines’ claims, technical glitches with the aircraft, same like staff strikes, are typically considered the airline’s responsibility and are not deemed as exceptional circumstances.

Situations that are not extraordinary circumstances:

3. Right to Care From Virgin Atlantic

You are entitled to receive support if you find yourself stuck at the airport.

If there’s a delay or cancellation of your Virgin Atlantic flight, resulting in a missed a connecting flight, Virgin Atlantic is duty-bound to provide you help while you await another flight. In addition, in case of a missed connection, Virgin Atlantic must offer an alternative flight free of charge, provided it wasn’t due to your fault that you missed it.

In terms of assistance, should your waiting time at the airport surpass three hours, you are eligible to request care from Virgin Atlantic.

  • Following a 3-hour wait, Virgin Atlantic is required to offer you free meals and drinks in a quantity reasonable to the waiting time, in addition to two free phone calls, emails, or faxes.
  • For overnight delays, free hotel accommodation should also be provided (+ free airport transfer).

4. How to Claim Virgin Atlantic Flight Compensation?

There are two methods to seek EU flight compensation.

The initial option is to reach out to Virgin Atlantic directly. You can visit their website and contact their customer support center to demand compensation for your flight. However, be aware that this could be a lengthy process, and you may need to negotiate with Virgin Atlantic to get the compensation you deserve. Having proof to show how late you arrived at your destination can be beneficial.

The second, more straightforward option is to seek legal help.

By selecting this method, you’ll have legal experts managing all aspects of your claim. Our partners provide such services – details below.

4.1 Claim Processing Time?

What is the usual timeframe to receive compensation from an airline?

Generally, it takes at least a few months to receive compensation.

If your case necessitates referral to a national enforcement body or court, the process might take an extra few months, and in certain instances, even additional six to twelve months.

Multiple factors can affect the duration of receiving compensation. If an airline quickly addresses your claim and agrees to pay compensation, the process can be quicker. However, if the airline contests your claim, it might take longer, and you may have to undergo an extended legal process to receive compensation. Moreover, the complexity of your case can impact the time it takes to receive compensation. Each case is unique.

5. Compensation Amount – What Can You Claim?

The compensation amount is set and varies between €250 to €600.

Here’s how you can estimate your Virgin Atlantic flight compensation:

When your destination is within the EU/UK:

€250

If the distance of your flight is
up to 1,500 km

€400

If the distance of your flight is between 1,500 – 3,500 km

When your destination is outside the EU/UK:

€250

If the distance of your flight is
up to 1,500 km

€400

If the distance of your flight is between 1,500 – 3,500 km

€600

If the distance of your flight is more than 3,500 km

There’s one exception. When the distance is 3500 kilometres or more and you reach your destination 3 to 4 hours later, you are entitled to compensation of €300, not €600. If the delay is longer than 4 hours, you will get full compensation of €600.

5.1 Virgin Atlantic Voucher Refund or Cash?

Virgin Atlantic might propose a voucher instead of cash compensation.

However, you can decline a voucher and choose bank transfer compensation instead. It’s essential to know that airlines are legally bound to offer compensation and refunds in cash or bank transfer, and not in the form of vouchers or coupons, as per European law.

Accept a voucher only if you want a voucher.

6. What Is a Connecting Flight?

A connecting flight is a journey where you have to board more than one flight to get to your ultimate destination. This involves a pause at one or more airports along the way. Rather than flying directly from the starting point (A) to the endpoint (B), passengers have to go through a middle point (C), or occasionally, a series of middle points. The time spent waiting for the next flight at the airport is known as a layover. Layovers lasting over 24 hours are referred to as stopovers.

Connecting flights are typically used when direct flights are not available or when the latter is pricier than the former.

There are two main types of connecting flights:

  1. airline-protected transfers,
  2. self transfer flights.

6.1 Airline-Protected Transfer

How can you verify if your transfer is protected by the airline?

  1. If the reservation for a connecting flight was made either directly with the airline or through a third-party service like Kiwi, Expedia, or eDreams, and there were no mentions that it’s a self transfer.
  2. If your journey involves two or more flights and is associated with a singular booking reference number provided by the airline. Remember, it’s the airline’s booking reference number, not the travel agent’s that you must be looking at — a crucial distinction. And you can manage and view your full itinerary by entering your booking reference number on the airline’s website.

6.2 Self Transfer

How can you recognize if you have a self-transfer flight?

  1. If you have several consecutive flights and each one was booked individually, it is a self-transfer flight.
  2. If each of your flights has a distinct reservation number, it is a self-transfer flight.
  3. If each flight was paid for separately, then it is a self-transfer.

Distinguishing between self transfers and airline-protected connecting flights can be puzzling. One way to identify the difference is by checking the tickets. If each flight has an individual reservation or booking reference number, it is likely a self transfer. Online travel agencies like Kiwi or Expedia also indicate whether the flight is a self transfer.

7. Missed Connection

Failing to board your subsequent flight is referred to as a missed connection.

You could miss the connecting flight because you’re late or if your prior flight was unexpectedly delayed or cancelled. Particularly when the transit or connection time is brief, for instance, 1 or 1.5 hours, missing your subsequent flight can happen quite easily.

It is important to note that, often, airlines step in to help travelers who’ve missed their connecting flight. If a late arrival at your destination isn’t a big deal, experiencing a delay can be beneficial as you might be eligible for flight compensation up to 600 euros per person.

Cancelled or delayed flight causes missed connection?

7.1 Missed Airline-Protected Transfer

Going for an airline-protected transfer is the safest bet for travelers.

If you fail to catch your next flight and it’s not your fault, the airline will provide protection and assistance.

When flight cancellations or delays lead to a missed connection, passengers are protected, and they may even be entitled to compensation. Virgin Atlantic usually arranges a new flight for you, and if the flight departure is on the following day, they provide a hotel stay for free. To resolve the issue, you should get in touch with Virgin Atlantic representatives at the airport.

Remember, under certain circumstances, compensation might be available.

What about compensation or refund?

Generally, you won’t get a refund for a missed flight.

However, if your flight is covered under EU Regulation 261/2004 or Regulation UK261, you may be eligible for compensation for your entire journey (this is the same as flight delay compensation / flight cancellation compensation).

Don’t forget to file a claim for compensation!

7.2 Missed Self-Transfer Flight

Self-transfer entails booking multiple flights separately.

What happens if you miss your self-transfer connection?

If any of the individual flights in your itinerary are delayed by 3 or more hours, cancelled, or if you’re denied boarding, you may be eligible for compensation for that particular flight. But, none of the airlines involved will be liable for your entire journey or any connections you miss.

For instance, if you have a flight with Ryanair to London, which we shall call “flight 1,” followed by a 3-hour layover and then a flight with Virgin Atlantic to New York, which we shall call “flight 2,” neither airline will take responsibility for any missed connection resulting from a delay or cancellation of flight 1.

If flight 1 experiences a significant delay (3+ hours), you may be eligible for compensation from Ryanair. In case of a last-minute cancellation, Ryanair may provide a new flight, refund, and compensation for flight 1, in line with ‎Regulation (EC) No 261/2004.

However, in the event you miss your Virgin Atlantic flight as a result, it is your responsibility to book a new flight to your final destination (New York, in this case). Neither Ryanair nor Virgin Atlantic will offer any compensation for flight 2, and you will not receive compensation for a missed flight connection.

The same applies to the Virgin Atlantic flight – flight 2. If it’s cancelled at the last minute, you may receive compensation for this specific flight. However, if it’s cancelled at the last minute and you’re offered a new flight 2 hours earlier that you can’t catch, you’ll have to deal with the issue yourself. You won’t be able to take that flight and will have to buy a new flight.

If you have insurance for missed flights, reach out to your insurance provider. They might be able to help you, depending on the circumstances.
