On occasion, baggage may suffer damage. We’re not referencing minor scuffs, tiny dents, or wear and tear on your suitcase. Virgin Atlantic doesn’t cover these types of mild damages. Yet, for severe damage like broken wheels, handles, or sizable issues such as punctures or splits, Virgin Atlantic can be held liable.

What to Do If Your Luggage Is Damaged?
The first step is to report the damage.
Don’t exit the baggage collection area, instead, seek out the Baggage Service Office. You can typically find this office in the baggage collection area, often near the baggage carousels. Here, you can lodge a report for your damaged baggage.
Ensure you have your passport and boarding pass on hand. Bring your damaged bag. Fill out the report and you will receive further instructions. Most likely, Virgin Atlantic will fix your bag free of charge. If your bag cannot be repaired, Virgin Atlantic will replace it.
If you notice the damage after leaving the airport, perhaps at home or your hotel, contact the Virgin Atlantic Customer Contact Centre within 7 days after arrival. Be mindful of this deadline. It’s best to report the damage as soon as you discover it.

Damaged Baggage Compensation
You may be eligible for compensation if your checked baggage is damaged.
Virgin Atlantic is accountable for this, and you could receive compensation of up to €1300.
The compensation amount is determined by the value of your damaged baggage. It should cover the cost of purchasing a new bag of similar value.

This compensation should be paid directly into your bank account by the airline. You don’t have to accept Virgin Atlantic compensation in the form of vouchers, miles, or coupons. Kindly note that Virgin Atlantic isn’t obligated to compensate for the full value of items like electronics, artwork, jewelry, etc., in your checked baggage. Compensation for such items is only to the extent defined by the Montreal Convention and its Conditions of Carriage.
Compensation isn’t applicable if the damage is due to a defect in the bag itself. Virgin Atlantic also isn’t liable for minor damage such as scratches, small dents, and typical wear and tear on your suitcase. This is just the reality of air travel.
Reimbursement of Expenses
You typically won’t receive anything in this scenario.
However, if your bag is lost or delayed, and you need to replace essential items, you can claim reimbursement for your expenses (sometimes referred to as delayed baggage compensation). You purchase all these necessary items, then file a claim by submitting all the receipts, and Virgin Atlantic reimburses you.
You must submit a claim for reimbursement within 21 days from the day your lost baggage is returned. This only applies to instances when your baggage is lost or delayed.
Is Travel Insurance Necessary?
Do you need travel insurance? It’s a yes-and-no situation.
Traveling without it is definitely possible.
Virgin Atlantic is liable for the safe delivery of your baggage thanks to the Montreal Convention, a treaty that governs baggage carriage. This Convention applies to most international flights of Virgin Atlantic and other airlines around the world.
However, having comprehensive insurance coverage is always beneficial.
It can expedite your compensation process. After submitting a report for damaged baggage, contact your travel insurance provider to find out the next steps. Depending on your policy, your travel insurance could cover the cost or cash value of your baggage. You’ll need paperwork from the Baggage Service Office to initiate a claim.
Do remember, not all insurance policies include baggage damage coverage. Ensure you’re aware of this beforehand, to prevent unnecessary stress and unpleasant surprises later.

Always good to have a backup strategy.
It’s wise to pack a change of clothes and some underwear in your carry-on. This is a precaution in case your suitcase and its contents suffer damage. Additionally, refrain from packing valuable items, money, medications, documents, and credit cards in your checked baggage. If your bag sustains significant damage (like large punctures or splits), the contents may also get damaged or potentially lost.
Carrying a foldable duffle bag can be beneficial. If your main bag gets seriously damaged, you can transfer your belongings to this duffle bag. This duffle bag can also be useful if you need to purchase any items during your trip. That extra space comes in handy also if you run out of luggage space at the end of your trip.
Please note that the rules for compensation for delayed or lost baggage with Virgin Atlantic are the same as those for other airlines. This is due to the Montreal Convention, which applies to the carriage of baggage on most international flights operated by Virgin Atlantic and other airlines globally.
